Cornish Yarg – Nettle-Wrapped Cheese from Cornwall
Leaf-wrapped elegance with a yoghurty tang and earthy finish.
• Milk Type: Cow’s Milk
• Rennet: Traditional
• Pasteurisation: Pasteurised
• Producer: Catherine Mead & Dane Hopkins, Lynher Dairies, Cornwall
• Style: Semi-hard, Nettle-Wrapped
A distinctly British original, Cornish Yarg is handcrafted by Catherine Mead and Dane Hopkins using milk from nearby Cornish herds. Each wheel is carefully wrapped in stinging nettle leaves—applied by hand and naturally edible—encouraging a gentle bloom on the rind that softens the cheese as it matures.
Inside, it’s fresh and bright, with a yoghurty acidity that evolves into buttery, vegetal depth. The texture is firm yet yielding, becoming creamier towards the rind as the cheese ages. The nettles lend a subtle earthiness and striking visual appeal, making it a centrepiece-worthy addition to any cheeseboard.
Pairing Suggestions
• Wine: Crisp English sparkling wine or dry cider
• Charcuterie: Complements fennel & garlic salami or lamb merguez
• Accompaniments: Quince jelly, green apple slices, or crusty sourdough
